'Have you Met?' is a blog series written by Space at 61 to highlight the many amazing local small business people within the Peckham area of SE London.
One of those people is Ashanti Jason, a Freelance Lifestyle Photographer, whose work has been seen in the Sunday Times & Grazia among other places.
The following is an interview she kindly gave us - All photographs are used with permission by Ashanti.
Ashanti Jason is 33, and a freelance lifestyle Photographer who lives in Peckham. For the past two years she has shot for prestigious brands ranging from Lancôme to Lavazza, catwalks and backstage at London Fashion Week.
1) How did you get into your career as a photographer?
I had been blogging as Adorngirl for around six years, and I was being approached by multiple brands because of my photography to create content for them. With a slew of work, I was able to put blogging part-time, and make Photography my main focus, and I haven't looked back.
2) How long have you been in the local area and how do you find it for work/ are you in and around the area working a lot or are you further afield?
I have always lived in Peckham, and do the majority of my still life work from home, but this has been commissioned by brands who are based in Central London. It would be great to collaborate with local creatives, and ultimately I am looking to expand and run my own studio in Peckham or Dulwich, where I can create content for brands and clients.
3) What is your favorite kind of project to work on?
I love creating still life and flatlays, The chance to curate beautiful setups, and have a play with lighting is truly rewarding. It is so important to be a well rounded Photographer, so I have started shooting model portraits and test shoots like at Space at 61 to round out my portfolio.
4) Who inspires you creatively?
I look to other Photographers like Me oh my girl, and Nadia Lee, who are amazing women who create captivating images that inspire me and push me to think more outside of the box.
5) Does your career combine well with a busy family life? (Im slightly dubious of these types of question because, would we ask a man the same thing?, but at the end of the day we want to inspire people)
Yes definitely, I am a single mum of four and being a Photographer allows the flexibility I need to fit around my kids.
6) Who would you most like to shoot and why?
It would be incredible to shoot Rihanna, can you imaging how cool that shoot would be?!
Thanks for your time Ashanti.
